Interconnected by K’ómoks artist Jeanette Laberge is a layered and vivid representation of how health and wellness are woven into our daily lives. Jeanette chose devil’s club and salmon as the resources used by K’ómoks people for physical, emotional, spiritual and social health.

This piece contains a multitude of interwoven stories. Devil’s club, once used for fish hooks, is a powerful medicine for body and mind. Salmon has always been an important food source for the survival of K’ómoks people, and in these high-paced modern times, fishing can bring a sense of calm. The heart in the salmon’s cheek is a gift to Elders, as they always come first. The salmon’s dorsal fin is a face with long hair, telling of K’ómoks history. It’s the face of every individual on their own journey yet always connected to helping hands, the flow of life, and the foods and medicine provided in these modern times.

Interconnected was the winning art piece in the 2025 K’ómoks Health and Wellness Art Contest.
